Hearing kids of deaf adults (KODAs) ages 8 thru 17 will enjoy an amazing experience, exploring their identity as bicultural individuals through increased awareness of ASL, deaf culture, hearing culture and by sharing their own stories.

KODAs will spend seven days and six nights at Camp Surf, located on Imperial Beach. This 45 acre facility is lucky to have some of the last undeveloped coastline left in Southern California. Imagine falling asleep each night to the sound of the surf in the background knowing that tomorrow will bring fun, adventure and learning.

2009 KODAWest Camp

2009 KODAWest Camp

The 2009 KODAWest Camp was an incredible experience for first-timers and returning KODA campers. A total of 55 campers, ranging in ages 8-17 embarked on a week-long adventure in the woods of Big Bear, California this past summer. These KODAs came together from all parts of the country to celebrate their bi-lingual and bi-cultural identities, and make life-long friendships. The third annual sold-out camp, directed by Molly Bowen (CODA), included many activities such as banana-boating, horse-back riding, leadership building games, arts and crafts, and swimming, Nightly campfires served as a time for reflection with campers and staff sharing koda stories.

Special thanks to the sponsors of this year’s camp: The Greenelight Foundation, Sprint Relay, Dawn Sign Press, Joe & Gina Sanders, and Western Interpreting Network. These sponsors made the 2009 KODAWest Camp possible and touched the lives of many KODAs.

We are currently working on the 2010 KODAWest Camp. More information to come in January. Stay Tuned.

Thank YOU to the staff of this year’s camp:
