You Know You Are A KODA When…..

….. you have told a tele-marketer that your parents are deaf and their reply is, “OK, we’ll call back later.”

….. you can call your friends on VP!

….. you watch TV without captions, and ask, “where are the captions?!”

….. people ask you if you are Italian because you always use your hands while talking.

….. you’ve got the best of both worlds, the hearing and the deaf.

….. you are your parents’ ears.

….. your friends want to learn ASL or the alphabet.

….. you realize that people are staring at you because you are signing to your parents, not because you look weird.

….. you have an ASL interpreter at your parent-teacher conferences.

….. you explain the difference between “death” and “deaf”.

….. you have been to a Deaf Expo.

….. you are really loud and don’t even know it.

….. you live by DST (Deaf Standard Time).

….. you get stuck interpreting a drive-thru order.

….. you have control of the radio at all times in the car.

….. your parents ask you to eavesdrop in public places.

….. everyone in your house yells.

….. someone tells you to call your parents, but you can’t.

….. you say “never mind” and your parents give you THE lecture.

…. your silent lullaby is your mommy rocking you to sleep by talking her hands off with her friends at the kitchen table.

….. you are the ears and protector of the house while your parents sleep through the night.

….. your parents have their own way of pronouncing your name.

….. you can’t just “call” your parents if you need a glass of milk, you have to walk to them. They, however, can call you, and never have to walk to you.

….. you have been told you have excellent eye contact.

….. you feel uncomfortable around expressionless people.

….. waving, stomping and pounding is in your daily agenda, even around your friends.

….. your friends learn how to articulate their words clearly.

….. you are always paying attention to every word people speak to your parents, just in case.

….. you have considered at one time or another, becoming a professional interpreter.
