What is the KODAWest spotlight? Every month, we focus on a particular member of the C/KODA and Deaf community who has contributed extraordinarily to the community. Spotlight also features individuals who wish to share an exceptional experience with discovering their K/CODA identity.
For our first spotlight, we are featuring Las Vegas Koda, Tavis Perna who recently completed his Bar Mitzvah.
“For my mitzvah project I gathered money for KODAWest Camp. KODA is an acronym for Kids Of Deaf Adults. My first time at KODAWest Camp I had a great time meeting people, who like me, have deaf parents. I just recently found out that a lot of kids couldn’t go to KODAWest due to lack of money. Kids with deaf parents sometimes have a lack of communication. If kids go to KODAWest Camp they can learn to communicate better with their parents and know that they aren’t alone. I raised money by participating in a community garage sale with my mom. We had a lot of stuff that we didn’t use anymore. We are going to do this again, but this time we are going to ask neighbors for donations of old unused stuff.”
Tavis is 14 years old, 9th grade and his hobby is video gaming. His future goal is to own a hotel.
Many thanks to all those who contributed to KODAWest on behalf of Tavis Perna. Congratulations on your Bar Mitzvah!
